Coupler Clearances
The coupler must be long enough that the exterior ground surface that the seal inside diameter rides on is completely through the bushing in the transmission tail case housing. If it is not then it will be necessary to use four couplers and a drive shaft as show below. In order to keep the coupler properly engaged in the differential coupler you must have a spacer inserted in the coupler behind the transmission output shaft. This spacer must allow approximately 1/8" of coupler movement to allow for chassis movement. The spacer can be made of aluminum, plastic or hardwood. Often a broom handle is called into action for this cause. The alignment of the engine centerline to the differential is critical, as misalignment will cause premature wear on the transmission tail case bushing and the couplers. Couplers are not designed to compensate for misalignment but will tolerate small amounts of misalignment. Put some anti seize on the coupler teeth before installation.

Coupler driveshafts for solid mount differential assemblies
On some cars where the distance is too great to make the trans coupler (A) reach the diff coupler (F) you need to use a driveshaft and slide couplers. This also applies to Altereds, Funny Cars and some long coupled Dragsters as well.

Funny Cars, Altereds and some dragsters you need one each from the above photo except for the lock collars (D) and you will need two of them. Select the correct ones for your application from the list below.

Coupler driveshaft covers for Altereds and Funny Cars Powerglide transmission drive shaft cover assembly. pn 28195-79021 This 1/8" thick (3mm) cover is designed to keep clothing from being entangled in the driveshaft that goes thorough the drivers compartment from the transmission to the diff gear set. By removing the four 1/4" bolts that hold the cover to the cover mount on the rear of the Powerglide transmission the cover can easily and quickly be removed to access the lock collars on the driveshaft to make removing the driveshaft quick and simple. Often clients will mount the shifter on the top of the driveshaft cover and it is robust enough to do this it is important to note that it should be done is such a way that it does not impair the removal of the driveshaft cover to access the driveshaft.
