email ken@kenlowe.com.au The LOWE Speed scoop is designed to get the air for the engine from undisturbed non turbulent air. The car passing through the air causes turbulence. The twisting and swirling air cannot possibly be uniform and this lack of uniformity can cause tuning problems. You decide how much air to give the engine. We want to do things your way. We want to give you all the tools possible to help you find the most horsepower and win races. How much air do you want to "push" into the engine ? Do you make it bigger than the carburetor? How much bigger ? Do you want to pressurize the top of the carburetor with ram air ? Or not ? If you have fuel injection do you want to ram the air in ? Everybody has their own ideas on what works. Do you make it bigger than the carburetor? Smaller ? How much ? We made our Speed scoop with the air inlet closed off to allow the racer to cut the size hole that he wants to have there. So we leave it up to you to experiment with what ever works best for you. Fiberglass cuts very easily. If you want to cut a hole in the front of the scoop. Take a black felt tip marker and draw the lines where you want them. I suggest a radius in the corners to make the scoop stronger and help reduce cracking. Now drill a hole in the center of the opening that you want to cut and take a jig saw and cut slightly to the inside of the lines. After the hole is cut out take some sandpaper 80 to 120 grit and smooth the edges back to the line that you drew for the opening. If you don't have a jig saw use a coarse hack saw blade by just wrapping one end with some tape to make yourself a handle on the blade and cut it out like this. If you want to make a nice finish on the rounded corners use a rotary burr in an air motor or even an electric drill. If you don't have one of these, use a round file for the corners. If you don't have one of these, use a wooden dowel (broom handle) with a piece of sand paper wrapped around it. If you want maximum air rammed in the scoop then just trim off all the front of the scoop. You can purchase a mounting tray from us to mount the scoop to the top of your carburetors or injectors or get your local sheet metal shop to bend you one up. Just make a tray from 3mm aluminum with side lips about 1 1/2" tall (40mm). The best way to mount the scoop to the tray is to use 4 Dzus fasteners to mount it. The 1/4 turn release fasteners make it fast and easy to get the scoop off to work on the carburetor. Be sure to dimple the tray for the rivet heads for the lock spring so the rivet heads don't dig into the inside of the scoop. Tray mounting to the engine can be done several ways. One is to cut a hole in the tray to fit the carb top through and make some straps to anchor the tray to the top of the engine with some of the intake manifold bolts or some available holes in the front and back of the cylinder heads. I think the best way is to make a 6mm alum plate to go under the carburetor with some outrigger tabs and make some aluminum stands to bolt through to the inside of the tray. I think this is a neater way to mount it and it gets rid of the straps going to the cylinder heads. If you wish to use an air cleaner with this scoop there is a great range of K&N air cleaners that will fit under this scoop and will keep the air to your valuable engine clean. It makes sense to use a proven successful method of mounting and standardize on that
method. The reason being that if most racers used this mounting method then scoops would
be interchangeable allowing you to try different scoops just by snapping them on and
making a pass down the track. The scoop might be slightly more valuable in resale if it
will just snap on to a standard mounting pattern. We have selected a recommended mounting
pattern based on what we know will work and some of what is being done already. All of our
drilled aluminum mounting trays come with this mounting pattern predrilled. For additional
clarification see included drawing. Measure the scoop on the mounting flange from the
front to the back, this is the "A" dimension, it is 566 mm long. If you divide
that in half you will get 283 mm this is the "B" dimension and the center of the
scoop mounting flange, mark this with a fine tipped pen or pencil. From this center point
measure forward and backward 198 mm, this is the "C" dimension, mark this with a
fine tipped pencil or pen. Now mark up from the bottom of the scoop 20 mm, this is the
"D" dimension and you have the cross points to drill your pilot hole with for
the Dzus fastener mounting hole. First drill a small pilot hole (approx 1/8") in the
center of the cross marks. This will guide the larger drill bit and keep it on the center
marks. Finish drill the Dzus holes with a 7/16" drill bit or a 11 mm drill bit. If
you are making your own mounting tray then use a similar procedure. Measure the tray from
front to rear and divide that by 1/2 and mark that point. From that point measure to the
front and to the rear by 198 mm and mark those points. Now mark up from the bottom of the
tray 20 mm and you have the cross marks to drill the mounting tray with. The Dzus fastener
springs are 1 3/8" long from the center of the rivet hole to the center of the other
rivet hole. Half of 1 3/8" is .687" or 11/16". If you mark either side of
the Dzus holes by 11/16" and drill with 1/8" holes you now have the Dzus spring
mounting holes drilled. Just pop rivet the springs on and you are ready to attach your
scoop. By using these dimensions then your scoop will interchange with a lot of other
